Home Energy Club ranked Lubbock as the least affordable energy city in Texas in a study on Monday.
The study ranked Lubbock as the least affordable energy city in Texas based on an analysis of electricity rates, income levels, and survey responses. Lubbock citizens pay 17.32 cents per kilowatt-hour, and the average electricity bill is around $242.
San Angelo and Abilene fell second to Lubbock with an average electricity rate of 16.19 and $226. The most affordable energy cities in Texas were Houston, Sugar Land, Spring, Baytown and Pasadena with around 14.10 cents per kilowatt-hour, according to the study.
The study found that over half of Texans who live in deregulated markets believe they are overpaying for their electricity. Low-income Texans spend 15 percent of their income on electricity costs and 30 percent of Texans would struggle to afford a $50 increase in their electricity bill.
