A deceased Lea County resident, who was unvaccinated, tested positive for measles, according to the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) on Thursday.

The official cause of the resident’s death remains under investigation. NMDOH confirmed the presence of the measles virus in the resident. The individual did not seek medical care before passing, according to the NMDOH.

Thursday’s case brings the total number of measles cases in New Mexico to ten, all of which are residents of Lea County. These cases included six adults and four children under the age of 17. Seven of the ten cases were unvaccinated, the remaining three have unknown vaccination history, according to NMDOH.
